Moose Safari – Information
Rumour has it that you would like to witness a moose, if so, here is some basic information to get you started
The route marked above takes between 1,5 to 2 hours to drive depending on how many animals you spot. There are a lot of moose in this area which means that the chances of spotting one is high. Nonetheless, this is a route surrounded by beautiful nature and old Norwegian farms which makes the drip worth it even if you cannot spot any animals.
Most of the time you will be driving on a dirt road, however, the route can still be driven by a campervan. But once again, it is a dirt road so some bumps should be expected.
The moose is most active during the late evening and the very early morning. We recommend driving the route at 8 in the evening early in the season, and between 9-10 later in the summer depending on how quickly it turns dark outside.
On the map you will spot some “x” markings around the route. They mark fields that are visible from the road you will be driving and are areas where the moose often likes to hang out in the late evening or early morning.
If you were to spot a moose or maybe even several of them, feel free to take pictures either from inside or outside of your vehicle. They are completely harmless, but remember, they are still very large and strong animals so do not antagonise them. Loud noises will additionally scare them away so try to stay very quiet. They have incredible hearing.
A tip for taking pictures of them is to keep the vehicle engine running. They usually only react to sudden changes in volume. They do as a result not react to the monotone sound of an engine, which means that you take advantage of the engine sound to cover up your own noises (opening and closing car doors, whispering, etc.).
Even though the moose is mostly harmless, if you were to spot a moose calf on their own, leave the area. The mother is always keeping watch and can be very protective of their child if they think it is being threatened.
The route can be driven in most weather, however, be advised that rainy weather will significantly lower the odds of spotting a moose since this will make them hide in the deep forest where they can use the trees as cover.
For any additional questions, feel free to ask us in the reception of the campsite. Here you can additionally book a camping spot for the night or rent a cabin.
Good luck!
